Montgomery

Known as the "Birthplace of the Texas flag," city was established in 1837 as the second of Stephen F. Austin's colonies. Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart, a resident of the town from 1838 to 1885, designed the first Republic of Texas flag and official seal, which was approved by the legislature and President Mirabeau B. Lamar in 1839. Dr. Stewart was the Republic's first Secretary of State and the first to sign Texas' Declaration of Independence. In 1997, then Gov. George W. Bush signed a resolution that officially proclaimed Montgomery County as the Birthplace of the Lone Star Flag.

More than 50 historic homes and buildings are located throughout the city. A self-guided City Tour and Shopping Guide are available at the Nathaniel H. Davis Pioneer Complex and Museum or in area businesses. Private tours: 877/898-STAR (7827).

Events include Christmas in Historic Montgomery in December, Historic Montgomery Food and Wine Trail in September, Farmer's Market (weather permitting) January–December, Lonestar First Saturday, and Antique Festival & Appraisal Day the first weekend in May.
