Corsicana

Pioneer Village in Corsicana

Established in 1848. Early boom touched off in 1894 when city was drilling for water, accidentally struck oil. One of Texas' first refineries built here in 1897. City was first in state to use natural gas for fuel and lighting, and crude oil for locomotive fuel.

Home of Navarro College and the Collin Street Bakery, 401 W. 7th Ave., known worldwide for its "DeLuxe" Fruitcake, a favorite since 1896. 800/292-7400. www.collinstreet.com.
