Big Spring

Comanche Trail Park's Big Spring

Region: Panhandle Plains

This seat of Howard County is in a gorge between two high foothills of the Caprock escarpment. Its name is derived from the huge natural spring in Sulphur Draw that provided water to buffalo, antelope, wild mustangs and coyotes, as well as Comanche and Shawnee Indians. First white men used site in 1849 as a campsite on the Overland Trail to California. Spring today is at center of city park.

City is home of Howard College and Dorothy Garrett Coliseum and Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf.
